Thanks for joining me here! And my apologies now: I’m probably not the fashion designer you’re thinking of. Please, stop buying clothes! Learn a few basics on how to mend your own or how to shop for truly high-quality garments if you must (hopefully thrifted), and just go out and live your life pursuing your dreams without thinking too much about what you’re wearing. Eeek! I absolutely love making weird, special, one-time-only fare, but shudder at the notion of this depressing fashion machine we’ve somehow created. We all did, I’m so sorry. But we can undo it! We can unlearn this pattern.
I always found it difficult to rationalize how much I enjoy making clothing (combining my two loves: the wonderful ceaseless world of fabrics and making functional sculptures you get to bring to life by clothing your body) vs. what the larger impact of the so-called fashion business has on our earth. I’ve pursued natural fibers from a weirdly young age (heartbreaking to my love of metallics and neons), the historic treasures & stories of thriftstore gems, and the idea that we are as a species so much more than a stupid fashion cycle. Dopamine hits should be from spending time with & for each other, not from buying stuff we don’t need. We can wear really cool things that tell ourselves and the world who we are & who we want to be without having to change this idea every S/S or F/W or Resort or now up to 52 micro-seasons a year. Mindboggling. Cultivate your own wardobe of what truly speaks to you, fashion cycles & seasons be damned! Buy (way, waaaay) less, buy really cool special items when you do, and go out & have fun making the world nicer for people. My hope is for a legacy of kindness.
If you ever want to chat or visit, I am really friendly and love cooking! Say the word and I’ll send you a postcard. Human connection is my favorite hobby 😀 xxhk
